HomeAltaVista HelpSearchSettings

The Settings page, available at the top of Web search boxes, allows you to control the look, feature-functionality and content of your Web search results pages.

Web page information

You can decide whether to show Web page descriptions, URLs, sizes (in bytes) and languages.

Useful links

  • Translate: This link lets you easily translate a Web page to any of nine languages. After you translate a page, AltaVista automatically translates the links you follow.
Results page format

  • Bolded search terms: AltaVista highlights the terms you searched for in bold text. You can turn this feature off.
  • Number of results per search results page: You can choose from 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50. When you elect to show fewer results, the page loads faster.
Languages to search in

You can specify any combination of 36 languages to search in. If you use the language menu in the search box, that overrides the choices you made on the "Settings" page. Does the text on your results pages appear garbled? The Settings page contains troubleshooting information.
